Put-In-Bay, OHIO - U. S. & Ohio State Fish Hatcheries - 1949: Put-In-Bay is a village located on South Bass Island in Put-In-Bay Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States 35 miles (56 km) east of Toledo. The population was 138 at the 2010 census. The village is a popular summer resort and recreational destination. Ferry and airline services connect the community with Catawba Island, Kelleys Island, Port Clinton, and Sandusky, Ohio. The bay played a significant role in the War of 1812 as the location of the squadron of U.S. naval commander Oliver Hazard Perry, who sailed from the port on September 10, 1813, to engage a British squadron just north of the island in the Battle of Lake Erie. In partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, the Aquatic Visitors Center served as the State Fish Hatchery at Put-In-Bay from 1907 to 1988. For over 80 years, this hatchery raised a variety of fish species. This helped preserve the rich ecology of Lake Erie. This species include all the fish species we enjoy catching from Lake Erie today. This includes walleye, sauger, whitefish, herring, yellow perch, coho salmon, chinook salmon, and also steelhead. The hatchery used hatching jars, raceways, and other artifacts to raise the fish. These are still on display today. This White Border Era postcard, mailed in 1949, is in good condition, but there is soiling and edge ware. Also, the card has some franking on the image. Webster, Punt in Bay. Mass. No. M,-1530.
