The Pelican Maki-e fountain pen "Five Lucky Bats" is drawn using the technique of Togidashi Taka Maki-e, which is a combination of Togidashi Maki-e and Taka Maki-e. In China, the pronunciation of "bat" has been regarded as a symbol of happiness because it resembles "biased fortune," which means that fortune is approaching. The pattern of "bat" is an auspicious pattern that collects all five fortunes, and there was a time when only noble people could have it. Even in Japan, it was regarded as a symbol of good luck with the Ateji of "protecting good luck".
In the lacquer fountain pen "Five Lucky Bats", five bats are drawn with Taka Maki-e using techniques such as Raden and Kirikane. In addition, five four-leaf clovers, which are said to bring good luck, are drawn (please see all my photos as I have done the best I can of trying to capture the beauty and artistry of this unique pen).
