On August 30, 2020, the San Francisco Giants visited the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The teams honored Jackie Robinson as all the players wore number 42. Johnny Cueto started for the Giants, while Taylor Clarke went for the Dbacks. The game was a pitchers’ duel as both starters hummed. Cueto gave up three hits and struck out six in 6.2 innings. Clarke struck out seven and gave up only one hit. That hit was this ball. Mike Yastrzemski led off the game. Yastrzemski fouled off the third pitch to make the count 1-2. Clarke then HELD THIS BALL IN HIS HAND. He threw a 94.7 mph four-seam fastball AND STRUCK OUT YASTRZEMSKI!! It was Clarke’s first strikeout of the night. (Me being stating the obvious since Yastrzemski was the first batter of the game.) Alex Dickerson then walked to the plate. Clarke still held this ball. He threw a changeup that missed. On the next pitch, Clarke threw another changeup, and DICKERSON LAUNCHED THIS BALL INTO THE SEATS IN RF FOR HIS FOURTH HOME RUN OF 2020 and, by my count, 20th of his career!! It was the only hit Clarke gave up. The Giants won the game 4-1 behind hits by Evan Longoria, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Crawford, Mauricio Dubon, Wilmer Flores, and of course Dickerson. (Brandon Belt, Yastrzemski, Donovan Solano, Chadwick Tromp, and Joey Bart all went hitless.) This ball is MLB Authenticated for Clarke’s strikeout of Yastrzemski AND Dickerson’s home run off Clarke.
