Description

Circa 1900 very rare original Bibendum (Michelin Tire Man) badge pin in a pewter color metal.
The figure on the pin is the forerunner of today's trademark of Michelin Tires.
The figure is surrounded by the inscription "With Bibendum's Compliments". Under the figure is "Nunc.Est.Bibendum" which translated from Latin is "Now Is Bibendum"
Measures approx 1 1/8'' wide
In 1894 Edouard and André Michrlin noticed a stack of tires that suggested to Edouard the figure of a man without arms. Four years later Edouard met with the French cartoonist Marius Rossillon (known as O'Galop). O'Galop showed him a rejected image he had created for a Munich brewery showing a figure with a large raised glass of beer and quoting "Nunc est bibendum". André suggested replacing the figure with the man made from tires and O'Galop transformed his earlier image into the Michelin's symbol. O'Galop's logo is based on stacked bicycle tires, while the Bibendum figure wears pince nez glasses with a lanyard and is smoking a cigar.
